Ezekiel.1:13 – As for the likeness of the living creatures, their appearance was like burning coals of fire, like the appearance of torches going back and forth among the living creatures. The fire was bright, and out of the fire went lightning.

Fire is one of the beautiful pictures or emblems of the Holy Spirit. Fire has many unique qualities about it that give glimpses into the world of the Spirit. Some of the characteristics are power, illumination, fervency, and cleansing. One of the most revealing is the characteristic of fire called assimilation. To assimilate is to take an object and make it part of yourself and like yourself. Fire is like that. For example if a fire breaks out in a house and at some point, chairs, tables, carpet and even the walls actually become fire. They are literally transformed almost instantly into another substance. That is exactly what the Holy Spirit does. When the fire of God comes upon us we are turned into fire; not just any fire, we become the fire of God. Have you been consumed lately? Here is how F. E. Marsh describes this characteristic.

“The living creatures in the book of Ezekiel are said to be in “ their appearance like burning coals of fire, and like the appearance of lamps: it went up and down among the living creatures; and the fire was bright, and out of the fire went forth lightning”. They were what they were because of the Spirit that was in them, for He is the It which went up and down among them. Matthew Henry says, “Fire makes all it seizes like itself”. The Spirit takes hold of what we are and makes us what He is…. The same principle hold good in this holy life to which we are called, “Like as He Who called you is holy, be ye yourselves also holy in all manner of living; because it is written, you shall be holy because I am holy”.”

Paul said in Hebrews, “Our God is a consuming fire”. The amazing thing about this is this; the fire of God consumes but it never ends. We become a part of God’s eternal consuming fire. That was the strange thing about Moses’s bush. The bush was burning but did not burn up, it just kept on burning. In Christ we will never “burn out”. We will just be enflamed again and again with the eternal fire of God.
