Mk 1:16,17 – And as He walked by the Sea of Galilee, He saw Simon and Andrew his brother casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen. Then Jesus said to them, “Follow Me, and I will make you become fishers of men”.
I recently watched the call of Peter from the series “The chosen”. This story always effects me profoundly. In this dramatic reenactment Jesus said something to Peter in his moment of repentance that absolutely has had me undone for a couple of days. The scene is the supernatural catch of fish, Peter is hanging his head in repentance, and Jesus says, “Fisherman, lift up your head”. As I rethink this scene it is as if Jesus is calling me fisherman, the greatest compliment I have ever received. I feel the Lord was standing over my bed when I woke for the first time Tuesday in the hospital calling out to me, “Fisherman, wake up to a brand new day”. I am awakening to a new day of expectancy, the day I have been praying and yearning for since the day we opened Victory Church in 1979. This is God’s day and our time to gather in the harvest. Here is how Matthew Henry describes this miracle.
“He said unto Simon, who was in the greatest surprise of any of them at this prodigious draught of fishes, “Thou shalt both see and do greater things than these; fear not; let not this astonish thee; be not afraid that, after having done thee this honor, it is so great that I shall never do thee more; no, henceforth thou shalt catch men, by enclosing them in the gospel net, and that shall be a greater instance of the Redeemer’s power, and his favor to thee, than this is; that shall be a more astonishing miracle, and infinitely more advantageous than this.” When by Peter’s preaching three thousand souls were, in one day, added to the church, then the type of this great draught of fishes was abundantly answered.”
Hey Fisherman, launch out into the deep and let down your nets for a harvest. I am not quite sure what this will all look like but something amazing is happening. Maybe there are a few sleepy old fishermen reading this today. Wake up Fisherman, Jesus is here. He is calling you to follow Him, He says we are going to change the world.
