1 John 2:20 – But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and you know all things.

1 John 2:27 – But the anointing which you have received from Him abides in you, and you do not need that anyone teach you; but as the same anointing teaches you concerning all things, and is true, and is not a lie, and just as it has taught you, you will abide in Him.

There are so many voices claiming spiritual authority and revelation speaking to us in so many different ways that it can seem quite confusing at times. John dealt with similar problems when so called ministers were claiming all sorts of revelation about the Lord. John wasn’t minimizing the role of teachers and preachers, he was just saying that if Christ is in you you have an anointing that will give you clear insight into what is of God and what is not. If you are born again you have an anointing within you and upon you that anointing will lead you into all truth. The word John used for anointing is chrisma which literally describes a smearing with oil, the anointing on you affects every part of your life. We have a smearing of the Holy Spirit upon us. Here is how the Fire Bible describes this passage.

“All true followers of Christ are given the anointing to set them apart as God’s children and to help lead them into truth. As believers remain in right relationship with Christ and commit themselves to spending time in God’s Word, the Holy Spirit helps them understand its life-transforming truths and how these truths apply to their lives. John is not ruling out the involvement of genuine Bible teachers, but he is speaking against false teachers who said that the message of Christ needed to be supplemented with a “higher knowledge” that they claimed to possess. John responded to this lie by reminding his readers that the message already revealed to them by the Holy Spirit working through Christ’s original messengers was the only reliable truth.”

From news reports, facebook preachers, and just outright heretics there are many ways to become distracted. We are in the beginning of an awakening in the youth of our nation, there is a struggle for their souls clearly setting in. Now more than ever we must press in to the word of God and lean on the anointing. We do have an anointing from the Holy One and He leads us into all truth.
