THE LAMB IN HEAVEN

Revelation 5:6 – And I saw a Lamb standing in the midst of the throne and of the four living creatures, and in the midst of the elders. It still bore the marks of having been slain. It had seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God despatched to all the earth.

John is seeing the mysteries of God unfolding right before his eyes. First, he sees the Lamb of God slain for the sins of the world. This appearance is another assurance that Christ is risen victoriously from the dead. He is alive in heaven carrying the marks of crucifixion is His body. He also is seen with seven horns and seven eyes. Here is how Barclay explains this scene.

“(1) The Lamb still bears the marks of having been slain. There we have the picture of the sacrifice of Christ, still visible in the heavenly places. Even in the heavenly places, Jesus Christ is the one who loved us and gave himself for us.

(2) There is another side to this. This same Lamb, with the marks of sacrifice still on it, is the Lamb with the seven horns and the seven eyes. The seven horns stand for omnipotence, the possession of infinite power. The Lamb also has seven eyes, and the eyes are the Spirits which are despatched into all the earth. The picture comes from Zechariah. There, the prophet sees the seven lamps which are ‘the eyes of the Lord, which range through the whole earth’. It is an eerie picture; but quite clearly it stands for the omniscience of God, his infinite knowledge. In an almost crude way, it says that there is no place on earth which is not under the eye of God.”

No wonder John was overcome at the appearance of Christ as the Lion and the Lamb. Here we see the humility of Jesus carrying the marks of redemption in His body, at the same time the seven horns and the seven eyes telling us of His omnipotence and His omniscience. This was He who displayed incredible meekness in His condescension and is now on full display as the One with ultimate power. These seven horns represent His omnipotence, He is the ultimate power ruling all things by His word. The seven eyes speak of His ability to see and know everything, nothing is ever hidden from His sight. He sees our struggles, our sacrifices, and knows exactly how to deal with each circumstance. He also sees and knows all of the plans against His kingdom and His people. He is orchestrating all things for complete and permanent victory. To us it may seem that the enemies of God are in control, nothing could be further from the truth. Everything is proceeding according to His plan and His return and the establishing of His kingdom is certain.
