Rev.1:4 – Grace to you and peace from Him who is, and who was, and who is to come, and from the seven spirits who are before His throne,
The book of Revelation is a glimpse into eternity. Paul called it looking through a glass darkly. When we glimpse into the eternal things of God we find everything quite different from this finite world that we live in. John clearly saw what he called “the seven Spirits of God” before the throne. Understanding these spiritual realities in heaven is really beyond us, all we can do is gaze into these heavenly things and be overwhelmed by His unveiled glory. Becoming dogmatic about these mysteries of this great book only reveals our ignorance. Its best to approach Revelation as a child. Here is how APRINGIUS OF BEJA describes this scene from the throne room.
“Here is that mystery of the number seven which is everywhere indicated. Here the seven spirits are introduced, which are one and the same Spirit, that is, the Holy Spirit, who is one in name, sevenfold in power, invisible and incorporeal, and whose form is impossible to comprehend. The great Isaiah revealed the number of its sevenfold powers when he wrote: “the Spirit of wisdom and understanding”—that through understanding and wisdom he might teach that he is the creator of all things—“the Spirit of counsel and might”—who conceived these things that he might create them—“the Spirit of knowledge and piety”—who governs the creation with piety by the exercise of his knowledge and whose purposes are always according to mercy—“the Spirit of the fear of the Lord”—by whose gift the fear of the Lord is manifested to rational creatures. This is itself the sacred character of the Spirit who is to be worshiped. It includes rather the ineffable praise, and does not indicate any form of nature.”
In this unveiling of the Holy Spirit from Isaiah’s prophesy and seen again in the book of Revelation, we see some of the characteristics of the Holy Spirit. We see His wisdom, His power, and knowledge. He sees, knows, and understands all things. Now here is the amazing thing about this scene in heaven that John saw. We have access to the throne of God and He who sits on the throne as well as access to the Holy Spirit. This is where we are filled with wisdom, knowledge and the power of God.
