Rev.1:19,20 – Therefore write the things which you have seen, and the things which are, and the things which will take place after these things. As for the mystery of the seven stars which you saw in My right hand, and the seven golden lamp-stands: the seven stars are the angels of the seven churches, and the seven lamp-stands are the seven churches.
John was now beginning to understand why he was still alive, the Lord had another important mission for him to fulfill. It was impossible for the enemies of the gospel to kill John until John’s work was done, this is a great lesson for all of us. First, make sure you are involved with God’s mission for your life, that is the safest place you can be. Next, realize that nothing can take you out until that mission is completed, this was the lesson John had learned from Jesus Himself. So many people tried to kill the Lord and could do nothing until the appointed day came for Christ to die for all of us. In a similar way the book of Revelation had to be written and that was that. Here is how Albert Barnes describes this passage.
“An account of the vision which thou hast had, Rev. 1:10-18.
And the things which are. Give an account of those things which thou hast seen as designed to represent the condition of the seven churches. He had seen not only the Saviour, but he had seen seven lamp-stands, and seven stars in the hand of the Saviour, and he is now commanded to record the meaning of these symbols as referring to things then actually existing in the seven churches.
And the things which shall be hereafter. The Greek phrase rendered hereafter—μετα ταυτα—means “after these things;” that is, he was to make a correct representation of the things which then were, and then to record what would occur “after these things:” to wit, of the images, symbols, and truths, which would be disclosed to him after what he had already seen. The expression refers to future times. He does not say for how long a time; but the revelations which were to be made referred to events which were to occur beyond those which were then taking place.”
So now it was time for John to write the vision down. The things he would see in this unfolding revelation was important for the future of the world and the Lord would make sure John was protected until this job was complete.

As God “speaks to us” through His written Word, it is how we “listen” to Him. When we have no prioritized time daily reading, listening, is that not telling Him, “I haven’t the time for listening to you”
