INTIMACY

John 6:53-55 – So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. Whoever feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day. For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink.

The natural mind just doesn’t understand the things of God, actually it is impossible to understand spiritual things without revelation that only comes by the grace of God. This teaching that Jesus gave in the synagogue in Capernaum was the very center of why Jesus came. What He taught that day became foundational for the church. Think about it like this, why did Jesus need to become a man? It was because of what had happened thousands of years before in the Garden of Eden. Man had sinned and had lost his most precious treasure, the ability to have an intimate relationship with the Lord. This of all things was the one thing we could never afford to lose; this is what brought Jesus to this earth, to bring us back to His Father. Here is how Augustine describes this mysterious passage.

“If his disciples considered this a hard saying, what must his enemies have thought? But it was necessary that there would be some things that should not be understood by all. The secret of God should make people more eager and attentive, not hostile.… But the people did not perceive that what he said had a deeper meaning or that grace went along with it. Rather, receiving the matter in their own way and taking his words in a human sense, they understood him as if he spoke of the cutting of the flesh of the Word into pieces for distribution to those who believed on him.”

So take a moment and go to the meeting in the synagogue in Capernaum. All we can see are shocked looks mingled with disappointment on all the faces in the room. Expectations of the masses in that meeting were not met because they had wrong expectations. Jesus came for more than filling bellies with fish and bread, He came to fill our souls with the Father’s bread and for most that would come a little later down the road. It would take a revelation from heaven for the masses to finally understand, this would have to wait until the Holy Spirit fell on many of them on the Day of Pentecost. Revelation changes everything, even our expectations.
