THE AMAZING GOSPEL
Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us, for it is written: “Cursed is everyone who is hung on a tree.”
Galatians 3:13
All of us were trapped, trapped by the power of sin that worked through our own lusts. Because of our sinfulness, we experienced the tragic fruit of our sinful behavior, the curse of the law. No matter how many times we determined to “do better” or made a decision to “turn over a new leaf” we found ourselves eating at the proverbial prodigal’s pig pen, feasting on the filthy pleasures of this world. That was our story until the day the amazing gospel of Jesus Christ began to shine through the dark haze that enshrouded our lives. The gospel of His grace broke the shackles of sin from our lives, we were no longer slaves of sin. Martin Luther relentlessly preached this amazing gospel, here are some of his thoughts.
“The gospel doesn’t focus on our works or the works of the law. Rather, it shows us the incomprehensible, inexpressible mercy and love of God toward us, who are unworthy and lost people. The merciful Father saw that we were oppressed by the curse of the law and held under it. On our own and through our own efforts, we never could have freed ourselves. He sent his only Son into the world. He put all the sin of all the people on his Son and said, “You will be Peter, who denied me; Paul, who persecuted, blasphemed, and acted violently; David, who committed adultery; the sinner who ate the apple in Paradise; the thief on the cross. In summary, you will be the one who committed all the sins of all the people.”
At this point the law said, “I find Christ to be a sinner—the one who has taken the sins of all the people upon himself. I do not see sin on anyone else except him. Therefore, he must die on the cross.” Then the law grabbed him and killed him.
Since this happened, the entire world has been cleansed and atoned of all sin and freed from death and all evil. If everyone in the whole world believed, God would see only purity and righteousness. This is because Christ would have taken away all sin and death.”
What a shocking story, the only sinless man who ever lived became sin for us. All of the sins of man were placed upon our Savior. He purged the dark stain of sin from my soul. The power of sin that held me in its grip has been broken, Christ has set me free. I am no longer under the guilt and shame of sinful behavior, my sins have been forgiven. I am no longer under the control of sinful behavior, those cords that bound me have been broken. The gospel is amazing. Not only am I accepted but I am changed. Because of the amazing gospel of Jesus Christ, I no longer liver under the horrible curse of the law.
