HEIRS WITH CHRIST

Rom.8:16 – The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, heirs also, heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ…

This passage can never be grasped without a major Holy Spirit download. We are heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ. Often in history only the first born would receive the inheritance, not so in the kingdom of God. According to Paul we are equal and fellow heirs with Christ. Whatever the Father possess He gives to His sons and daughters. The inheritance we have in Christ is impossible to describe or comprehend. The first shocker is that we are heirs of God. God Himself is the treasure of our inheritance. This means nothing to the lost or to sleepy Christians but to those with eyes wide open this is quite over the top of anything we can think of. If that is not enough all of God’s children are also our inheritance. To add something else to all of this, all of His creation is ours as well, we have inherited all things. Here is how Matthew Henry describes this.

“Heirs of God. The LORD himself is the saints’ inheritance. Seeing and enjoying God make up the inheritance the saints are heirs to.
Joint-heirs with Christ. True believers shall inherit all things. Those who now share in the Spirit of Christ as his brothers and sisters will, as his brothers and sisters, share in his glory.…..In our present state we fall short not only in the enjoyment of that glory but also in the knowledge of it, but it will be revealed. It surpasses all that we have ever seen and known. There is something to come, something behind the curtain, that will surpass them all. This glory shall be revealed in us, not only revealed to us, to be seen, but also revealed in us, to be enjoyed.”

Going back to the verse for today, it is the Holy Spirit that testifies or makes all of this real to us. We have heard stories of people who lived and died in poverty not realizing their heritage and inheritance, being wealthy and living like a pauper. In Christ we are rich, not only in the life to come but we taste the edge of this inheritance now. What we have in heaven all starts in a smaller degree in this present life. Today, God is your inheritance, your brothers and sisters in Christ are your heritage, and literally this earth belongs to God and His children. Maybe its time to cash in on some of this.
