GROANING WITH CREATION

Rom.8:22,23 – For we know that the whole creation groans and labors with birth pangs together until now. Not only that, but we also who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, eagerly waiting for the adoption, the redemption of our body.

Rom.8:26 – Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.

Paul describes creation as groaning in anticipation of the unveiling of God’s kingdom. The picture he paints is one of a woman in childbirth suffering the final pains of transition. The suffering is intense but something great is about to be born. Paul goes on to say that not only is creation laboring in childbirth but so are we, the sons and daughters of God. This groan in us is actually the intercessory prayer of the Holy Spirit praying in us and for us and through us. This is the vehicle the Lord has chosen to give birth to His kingdom here on earth. He is unveiling His glory in us and through us. What is our role? We are to yield to the groaning of the Spirit in us. Here is how the Christ Centered Expository Commentary describes this groan of creation.

“The creation was marred through the sin of humanity, and the creation will be restored when the children of God are glorified. Paul summarizes verses 20-21: “For we know that the whole creation has been groaning together with labor pains until now” (v. 22). This is some vivid language—groaning with labor pains! We share this groaning with creation (v. 23). The analogy of labor pains also calls to mind the joyous outcome of a successful birth: the arrival of new life. Creation and the saints are called to push through the pain in order to experience the joy of the glorious life to come.”

Something wonderful is stirring all around us and even in us. It may not appear pleasant and we may shrink back at times unsure of how to go forward. The time of the end draws near, creation’s groan is intensifying in the signs of the times. At the same time the Lord is calling in His people and awakening His bride. What an exciting time to be involved in the work of God.
