CONTINUED STEADFASTLY

Acts 2:42 – And they continued steadfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers.

The early church was supercharged with supernatural life. This life was not only demonstrated through the power of signs and wonders it also was evident in their day to day life. There was a hunger to talk about the teaching of the apostles, to fellowship together, to take communion, and also spending time praying together. The Spirit of God was filling the air with excitement, life, and expectancy as the believers were gathering together in homes all over Jerusalem. They seemed to be anxiously waiting for each gathering whether in the temple courts to hear the preaching of one of the apostles or in one of the homes drinking in God’s presence together. Everyone’s life had changed suddenly and completely, no one could get enough of this brand new life. Here is how Matthew Henry describes this moment in Jerusalem.

“They frequently joined in the ceremony of the LORD’s Supper. They continued in the breaking of bread. They broke bread from house to house; they administered that ordinance in private houses. They moved from one to another of these little synagogues or domestic chapels, celebrating the Eucharist there with those who usually met there to worship God.

They continued in prayers. After the Spirit was poured out, as well as before, they continued to be faithful in prayer, because prayer will never be superseded until it comes to be swallowed up in eternal praise.

They were full of thanksgiving; they were continually praising God. This should be part of every prayer, and not be crowded into a corner.

They were loving to one another, and their joining together in holy ordinances very much endeared them to one another.

They met frequently for Christian fellowship: All that believed were together. They associated together and thereby both expressed and increased their mutual love.

They had all things common. There was such a readiness to help one another that it could be said that they had everything in common, according to the law of friendship.

They were very cheerful. They did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart.”

This passage describes what it is like to be in the midst of a move of the Spirit of God. Scenes like the one in Jerusalem were described by Jonathan Edwards as taking place in Northampton, Massachusetts in 1734-1735 when there was a strong outpouring of the Spirit in their community. Apparently they were gathering everyday for worship and preaching, young people started groups in various homes to talk about the move of God, any many people were turning their lives over to the Lord for the first time. Times like this are very precious, maybe we are on the verge of something like this in our community.
