Ps.40:2,3 – He also brought me up out of a horrible pit,
Out of the miry clay,
And set my feet upon a rock,
And established my steps.
He has put a new song in my mouth—
Just think of where you were when Jesus found you. David sang about being in a horrible pit, the Lord found him there, brought him out of the pit, established his steps, and put a new song in his mouth. This Psalm is a description of the work of redemption and reminds us all of the great work the Lord has done for us. Today we are in the heart of Thanksgiving season 2025 and this Psalm remind us where we were when we were captured by His love and the affect His love has had on us. He literally put a new song in our mouth. 285 years ago Jonathan Edwards preached about this new song at Thanksgiving in Northampton, Massachusetts as his church was experiencing a powerful move of the Spirit of God. Singing was a major part of their church in those days. Check out this quote from Thanksgiving 1740 in Jonathan Edwards’ sermon.
“And then they have received new mercies themselves. God has done great things for them that are new things. God has delivered [them] “out of the pit wherein is no water”….. And he hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God: many shall see it, and fear, and shall trust in the Lord.” He has delivered out of spiritual captivity, has by his mighty power overcome the strong man armed. He has gloriously rode forth in the chariots of salvation in their behalf. He has broken the heads of Leviathan in pieces, has subdued Satan under their feet, and caused them to tread on the lion and adder and to trample under foot the young lion and dragon. He has called ’em out of darkness into marvelous light. They who were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ. God has forgiven all their sins and blotted ’em out as a thick cloud. And they have received the adoption of children. God is become their father, and they are become God’s sons and daughters.”
So what kind of song is in your heart this Thanksgiving? Are you drinking from the cup of disappointment and sorrow? Are you still wallowing in the pit of despair? Maybe its time for a new season in your life, filled with a new song. Jesus is coming your way, I believe He is going to bring you out of your pit and put that new song in your mouth.
