Lk.2:6,7 – So it was, that while they were there, the days were completed for her to be delivered. And she brought forth her firstborn Son, And she brought forth her firstborn Son, and wrapped Him in swaddling cloths, and laid Him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.
Mankind has been drawn to Bethlehem for several thousands of years. Bethlehem was the home of David who became the King in Israel. Before David was coronated as king he lived in exile being viciously hunted down by King Saul. In one of David’s lowest moments he longed to drink from the well of water found in Bethlehem. His faithful men risked their lives to bring a drink from that well to their future king. Instead of drinking from the well David poured it on the ground. David said he couldn’t drink it because his men had risked their lives to bring David this water. Jesus Himself is actually the fountain of Bethlehem. Flowing out from Him is the water of life that quenches the thirst of all of our souls. Here is an anonymous quote from Hundreds of years ago about this fountain found in Bethlehem.
“Bethlehem has opened Eden: Come, let us see! We have found joy hidden! Come, let us take possession of the paradise within the cave. There the unwatered stem has appeared, from which forgiveness blossoms forth! There the undug well is found from which David longed to drink of old! There the Virgin has borne a child, and at once the thirst of Adam and David is made to cease. Therefore let us hasten to this place where for our sake the eternal God was born as a little child!”
This place called Bethlehem became the fountainhead of Living Water. It wasn’t from a king’s throne in this world that men’s needs were met, it was from the simple manger that protected our Lord that became the place that this Living Water sprang forth. David had received a promise that one born from his seed would rule the world and become the Savior of the world. David longed for the waters of Bethlehem but he knew something better was coming. He longed for the day when the true Shepherd would be born and lead us all by the quiet waters of rest. Today the Living Water is flowing freely, let’s go to Bethlehem and drink again from the ancient fountain of God.
