COMPASSION AND THE POWER OF GOD

Matt.14:14 – And when Jesus went out He saw a great multitude; and He was moved with compassion for them, and healed their sick.

The love of God is linked together with God’s miracles. In this simple verse we see the inspiration and the power behind the healing ministry of Jesus. There it is right in front of us in black and white, Jesus was moved with compassion and healed the sick. That was at the heart of all that He did. Jesus loved people and He was consumed with the anointing of the Holy Spirit Who is the manifestation of God’s love. Jesus saw sick people and He healed them, He saw hungry people and He fed them, He saw you in your mess and came to you and changed your life. The Holy Spirit consumed Jesus, He was moved by the love of God. Here is what Jonathan Edwards said about the Holy Spirit in relation to the love of the Father and the Son.

“There dwells God the Father, and so the Son, who are united in infinitely dear and incomprehensible mutual love.…There Christ dwells in both his natures, his human and divine, sitting with the Father in the same throne. There is the Holy Spirit, the spirit of divine love, in whom the very essence of God, as it were, all flows out or is breathed forth in love, and by whose immediate influence all holy love is shed abroad in the hearts of all the church. There in heaven this fountain of love, this eternal three in one, is set open without any obstacle to hinder access to it. There this glorious God is manifested and shines forth in full glory, in beams of love; there the fountain overflows in streams and rivers of love and delight, enough for all to drink at, and to swim in, yea, so as to overflow the world as it were with a deluge of love.”

Jesus told us the night before He left that we would do the same things that He did because the Holy Spirit would be upon us. So this is how all of this sorts out – we are captured and consumed by God’s love, this love overwhelms us and overflows out of us so that we too are moved with compassion just like Jesus was. As we reach out to the hurting the Lord ministers through us with signs, wonders, and miracles. Welcome to the ministry of Jesus!!
