Acts 2:4 – And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
I loved the worship services during the years of the Jesus Revolution and the Charismatic Renewal. Worship was filled with joy, spontaneity, and would often include seasons of worshipping together in the heavenly language. Nothing on this side of eternity comes close to the blessing found when believers sing together in the heavenly song. It is really other worldly. Today, that practice has fallen out of favor and is often criticized by those who claim to be baptized in the Spirit and even believe in the prayer language. They say it is confusing and ‘out of order’ but I find it exactly the opposite. There is no greater place of harmony and spiritual unity than when brothers and sisters sing for extended periods of time in the Holy Ghost. To me, singing with others in the Spirit is a real taste of heaven. Vincent Synan describes this in his book on William Seymour, here is an excerpt from that book.
“One of the most remarkable features of the meetings (at Azusa Street) was the “heavenly choir.” As few as one or two or as many as twenty men and women would spontaneously join in an anthem, all in harmony and in different pitches, each singing in a language that was unknown to them. An observer described the manifestation by saying, “This singing service was literally inspired by the Holy Ghost. It was mostly in known tunes, but the words were chosen by the Holy Ghost.” “It was not something that could be repeated at will, but supernaturally given for each special occasion and was one of the most indisputable evidences of the presence of the power of God.” Bartleman said it was “beyond description…the very foretaste of the rapture.” Williams reported, “It would sweep over the congregation, no words, just worshiping, intoning in the Spirit.” Many skeptics were convinced of the authenticity of Pentecost when they saw and heard this demonstration.”
I believe praying together in the Spirit is closely connected to outpourings of the Holy Spirit. We are tasting the edge of a fresh move of God today, you would have to say the condition of society is demanding it. A tsunami of the Spirit jut might be upon us. Whether that’s true or just my hope I think I will just go ahead and have another drink.
