Rev.22:16. – I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, and the bright and morning star.
This verse is at the very end of the last chapter of the last book in the Bible and it is actually a word from the Lord Jesus Himself. He says that He is the root and the offspring of David. This reminds me of what Paul said in his letter to Timothy, “Great is the mystery of godliness, God was manifest in the flesh….”. That is exactly what Jesus is saying in this passage, David came from Him and He came from David. This is something like Jesus asked the Pharisees just days before He was killed, “What think ye of Christ? Whose Son is he? They say unto him, The son of David. He saith unto them, How then doth David in spirit call him Lord, saying,
The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, till I make thine enemies thy footstool? If David then call him, Lord, how is he his son?” Here is how Oecumenius, one of the church fathers describes this verse.
“We might think that it would have been more consistent had he said, “I am the branch that has sprung from the root of David.” However, on the contrary, he has here called himself the root of David, and not only “root” but also the “offspring.” He is “root” and cause of all things, including David, insofar as he is and is known to be God, while he is “offspring” of David and has sprung from him according to the flesh, insofar as he is and is known to be man. And so he is—as the holy apostle somewhere says of his own words, “it is not irksome to me to say the same things” often, and for those who read them it is safe—and so he is the Immanuel, of divinity and of humanity, possessing both [natures] perfectly, according to the traditional language, unconfusedly, unchangeably, immutably, really. We are convinced that after the inexpressible union there is one person, one hypostasis and one energy, “even if the difference of the natures, from which we state the ineffable union has been made is not perceived,” nor the characteristic of each according to their natural quality, as our holy father, Cyril, says.”
So this is what we will see and marvel at in eternity. Jesus will manifest Himself in both natures, the Son of God the Creator and Sustainer of all things. We will also see Him in His humility walking among us as a man. Heaven is going to be an amazing place, we will also see it for ourselves very soon.
