12 BASKETS FULL – DEVO

Mark 6:43 – And they took up twelve baskets full of the fragments, and of the fishes.

The day that Jesus fed the multitudes was loaded with miracles. After everyone had eaten to their fill, the gospels say that there were twelve baskets full of fish and bread left over. I wonder if the disciples, over the years, thought about everything they saw that day and concluded the day itself was like twelve baskets full? I think of these twelve baskets full as an indication of all the messages that were there in the miracles that happened that incredible day. Jesus was moved with compassion and He healed all of the feeble and sick. He also pastored the people seeing them as sheep without a shepherd. He saw the confused look in their faces and He taught them the word of God. He spoke like no other man teaching the people about the kingdom of God. He saw the hungry people everywhere, took up a little boy’s lunch and blessed it, acknowledging the Lord as the King of the Universe. He broke the Bread and distributed it feeding over 5000 hungry sheep. After He dispersed the crowd He went up on a mountain to pray. This was a picture of Christ in heaven today praying for you and me. As He prayed He saw the disciples in trouble on the Sea of Galilee, He came to them walking on the water to save and comfort His disciples. Jesus stepped on the boat and the wind ceased – displaying again His authority over all creation. Immediately the disciples and the boat were transported across the sea, He is the Lord of time and space and nothing is impossible with Him. As Jesus arrived on the other shore crowds of hurting people gathered around Him, power was surging from Him and as many as touched the hem of His garment were healed. As He taught in the synagogue that day He told them they had to eat His body and drink His blood.

What a day this had been; teaching, healings, food multiplied, walking on water, boat transported supernaturally, storm calmed, and the message of His body and His blood given to His followers.

Possibly years later the disciples and anyone who had been there that day remembered the twelve baskets full after everyone had eaten their fill. Those baskets were filled with the bread from heaven, the word of God that nourishes our soul. Maybe its time to reflect on all that God has done and realize He is more than enough and there is always twelve baskets full at the end of the day.

  1. I love how as we learn to meditate on the Word, our food, a supernatural satisfaction comes as we digest it. As we hunger for more of God, great, great changes are always the results.
