Ps.110:1 – The LORD said to my Lord,
“Sit at My right hand,
Till I make Your enemies Your footstool.”
This has to be one of the top prophetic words given in the entire Bible. King David prophesied that the Father would proclaim the Messiah as God and have Him take His place on the throne ruling the Universe. No wonder this became the preaching text for many of the apostolic sermons in the first century of the church. The earthly ministry of Jesus was complete, His blood had been offered to purge us from our sin, and Jesus was exalted above all other beings and names. From this point on all people from every race could be filled with the Holy Spirit. Here is how the Jonathan Edwards Study Bible describes this prophesy.
“This psalm is one of the most quoted in the NT, applied directly to the life and ministry of Jesus Christ. JE, like all Reformed and Puritan commentators, saw great Christological significance in the Book of Psalms for messianic prophecies in general and Psalm 110 in particular. He wrote in A History of the Work of Redemption, “For whereas before there was but here and there a prophecy given of Christ in a great many ages, now here Christ is spoken of by his ancestor David abundantly in multitudes of songs, speaking of his incarnation, life, death, resurrection, ascension into heaven, his satisfaction, intercession, his prophetical, kingly, and priestly office, his glorious benefits in this life and that which is to come, his union with the church, and the blessedness of the church in him, the calling of the Gentiles, the future glory of the church near the end of the world, and Christ’s coming to the final judgment. All these things and many more concerning Christ and his redemption are abundantly spoken of in the book of Psalms.”
Prophesy has always astounded me. Think of this, 1000 years before Christ was born David saw Him as the One who would sit at the Father’s right hand and rule the Universe. In this verse David declares His deity and His ultimate victory over all of the enemies of the kingdom of God. Today, the Lord is still sitting on the throne; He is praying for us, upholding everything (including you) by His word, and He is pouring out His Spirit on all who are thirsty. Let’s look to Jesus, set our affections on Him, worship before His throne, the end of His enemies is imminent and His kingdom is about to be installed on earth.
