2 Cor.4:5,6 – For we preach not ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord; and ourselves your servants for Jesus’ sake. For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.
Recently in a Sunday service someone who was suffering from glaucoma and had lost sight in one of their eyes received a healing. The eye doctor confirmed the healing declaring that the eye was perfectly normal. Healing of blind eyes was very common in the ministry of Jesus. Like all of His other miracles they solved an immediate crisis but also became a sign pointing to the most important miracle of all, opening the spiritual blind eyes of the lost so that they can behold the beauty of God in Christ. In today’s passage Paul compares the gospel to the word that was spoken by the Lord when light itself was created, “Let there be light”. Apparently that word is still reverberating in the farthest regions of the universe as it expands constantly in billions of stars of light. When someone hears the gospel and believes it there is light that bursts into their world. We come out of the darkness into His marvelous light at the sound of His voice. Here is how Jonathan Edwards describes this.
“…true Christians do understand this: they have seen the King in his beauty; they understand that Christ is more precious than rubies, and that he is a fountain of wealth and honor and happiness. Whatever temporal knowledge men have, they only know this that have it revealed by the special enlightening of God himself. 2 Cor. 4:6, “God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.” Gal. 1:15–16, “But when it pleased God, […] to reveal his Son in me.”
Jesus Himself proclaimed, “I am the Light of the World, He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life”. The light of Christ opens the eyes of the blind. Before the gospel entered our lives we could not see, the Bible and everything related to it was repulsive to us. It was the light that shines out from Christ that gave us the strange attraction to Him. We can say like the blind man healed in the gospel of John, “ I was blind but now I can see”.
