Isa.28:11,12 – For with stammering lips and another tongue will he speak to this people. To whom he said, This is the rest wherewith ye may cause the weary to rest; and this is the refreshing: yet they would not hear.
At the end of the day that is what all of us are looking for, all we want is a little rest. Everyone seems to have a different path that they take in search of this rest. You know the drill; some look for this rest in a drink to unwind after a rough day, someone else may think I just need a long weekend for some rest, and someone else may just want to climb in bed and pull the covers over their head. Isaiah’s prophesy points us to a very different kind of rest, a spiritual rest. He was looking to a day when all people could be filled with the prophetic anointing and find a spiritual rest in His presence. The atmosphere we will taste in heaven is this rest, the rest that God enjoys. Having access to the rest now is just really over the top. Here is how Dick Mills explained it in a word study on the Hebrew word for rest – menuchah –
“rest, menuchah (meh-noo-chah); Resting place; place of stillness, repose, consolation, peace, rest; a quiet place; also the condition of restfulness. Menuchah is derived from nuach, a verb meaning “to rest, soothe, settle down, comfort.” Because Noah’s parents foresaw comfort through his life, they named him “Noah,” which comes from this root.
Is. 28:12 states, “This is the resting place; let the weary rest!” Menuchah is greatly soothing, comforting, and settling, as in Ps. 23:2, “He leads me beside the waters of menuchah [the waters of quietness.”
Paul referred to this prophesy in 1 Corinthians 14:21 – “In the law it is written, ‘With men of other tongues and other lips will I speak unto this people…’”. Isaiah went on to say, “this is the rest where you may cause the weary to rest”. So what exactly is being offered here? This is a spiritual rest, a rest and refreshing that renews our inner man when we pray in tongues. Only the Lord can bring true rest to us and He has instructed us to draw near to Him worshipping Him in the Spirit and as we do we are filled with the renewing and refreshing of the Lord which is the experience of God’s rest.
