THE ALMOST SILENT PRAYER

Mark 7:34 – And looking up to heaven, he sighed, and saith unto him, Ephphatha, that is, Be opened.

Stenazo – Sighed – of those who offer silent prayer

This passage just oozes with the love of Jesus for fallen man. In this instance Jesus is praying for a man who cannot speak or hear. His prayers could be called almost silent because they are described as sighing rather than praying specific words. It’s almost as if Jesus is identifying with this wordless man as He cries over Him for total restoration. This is very close to the wordless sighing of the Spirit as He prays through us in other tongues. In Romans Paul describes a wordless prayer as we are crying out for our own total restoration at the coming of the Lord

Rom.8:23 – And not only they, but ourselves also, which have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption, to wit, the redemption of our body.

Paul goes on to describe our ‘wordless prayers’ when we are crying out for our own physical and emotional restoration in this next verse in Romans.

Rom.8:26 – Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.

Brian Simmons agrees as He sees us praying for ourselves and others in the Spirit. Our wordless sighs and groans are the intercession of the Spirit that the Lord uses to bring about His kingdom.

TPT NOTES – “groanings.” We find three groanings in this chapter. Creation groans for the glorious freedom of God’s children (v. 22), we groan to experience the fullness of our status as God’s children (v. 23), and the Holy Spirit groans for our complete destiny to be fulfilled (here).

Finally, we are groaning in anticipation of receiving our new bodies. These bodies are wearing out and there is a groaning inside of each of us to put on the eternal body that we will enjoy forever. Here is Paul describing these groans.

2 Cor.5:1-4 – For we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved, we have a building of God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.

For in this we groan, earnestly desiring to be clothed upon with our house which is from heaven: If so be that being clothed we shall not be found naked. For — we that are in this tabernacle do groan, being burdened: not for that we would be unclothed, but clothed upon, that mortality might be swallowed up of life.

So its okay to groan, its actually cooperating with the Spirit of God.
