THE COMMUNION OF THE FATHER, SON, AND HOLY SPIRIT

2 Cor.13:14 – The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. Amen.

This verse touches the very essence of what Jesus spoke about in John 17:3, “And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent”.

We were born to know God, to have communion with God. Paul is describing this communion as a spiritual connection or fellowship with the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. This is what was purchased for us at Calvary and is our eternal inheritance. We taste the edge of this communion through our relationship with the Holy Spirit in our natural world. When we step into our eternal inheritance we will literally be swallowed up in God. He is our portion and our eternal reward. Here is something Jonathan Edwards said about our communion with God.

“It appears that the Holy Spirit is the holiness, or excellency and delight of God, because our communion with God and with Christ consists in our partaking of the Holy Ghost. The oil that was upon Aaron’s head ran down to the skirts of his garments; the Spirit which Christ our head has without measure is communicated to his church and people. The sweet perfumed oil signified Christ’s excellency and sweet delight.

Communion, we know, is nothing else but the common partaking with others of good: communion with God is nothing else but a partaking with him of his excellency, his holiness and happiness….every part of the life and work of Christ, from his conception to his resurrection, was by the Spirit of God. And since “all divine communion” is by the Holy Ghost, “the Spirit of God is the bond of perfectness by which God, Jesus Christ, and the church are united together.”

Before we knew Christ for ourselves we were on a quest, we were searching for God even though we may not have realized that is what we were searching for. When He burst into our lives it was not what we expected but it was infinitely greater than we could have hoped for. We have been brought into this heavenly community or family, our fellowship is with the Father, His only Son, and the blessed Holy Spirit. It can’t get much better than this.
