IMMEASSUREABLY MORE

Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine,

according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church

and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.

EPHESIANS 3:20–21

I love this verse of scripture. Paul says some very powerful things here about God’s power working in us.  Not only is the Lord able to do above and beyond what we ask or think, He actually does it through us and in us. Here is the key to this power in us, it’s the easily missed word ‘according’. You could replace this word with in proportion to. The Lord is working through us proportionally, according to the power that is at work in us. So actually, it all boils down to yieldedness. The more I yield, the more He works in and through me. This places me in a place of utter dependency on God. This brings us inevitably to the place of humility and worship. I recognize and yield, He works in me, I respond with amazement and worship. Here are some thoughts on this passage from Andrew Murray.

“Paul had apparently reached the highest expression possible of the life to which God’s mighty power could bring the believer. But Paul is not content. In this doxology he rises still higher and lifts us up to give glory to God as “able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine.” Pause for a moment to think what that immeasurably more really means, and how everything we receive is the fruit of the abiding presence of Jesus in the life of the believer.

While you are kneeling before God in adoration, you are reminded of the greatness of His power that is working in you. When you realize it is the same power that raised Jesus from the dead and forgave your sins, you will feel like falling down before the Lamb to join the crowds in the universal chorus that John describes so vividly in Revelation 5. The Lamb is indeed worthy of your adoration!”

How did this all start for the Apostle Paul? This immeasurable power began to work in Paul on the Damascus Road. The Glory of the Lord knocked Paul from his horse, his life of yielding began. The Lord found a vessel He could work through. So maybe this will be the year that this immeasurable power will arrest you. If it does, just yield. Before you know He will begin to do above and beyond what you can ask or think.
