2Chr. 6:18 ¶ “But will God indeed dwell with mankind on the earth? Behold, heaven and the highest heaven cannot contain You; how much less this house which I have built.

Human beings have some strange concepts of God. The Hindus make dolls and worship them because somehow, they imagine, thinking about God as they make these idols makes them into God; go figure. The animists actually think God lives in animals or trees (that sounds really weird) and then some Christians think He literally lives in the bread and wine at communion. Where does God abide and how does He reveal Himself to us in this life. Charles Spurgeon had some great insight on this topic.

“Salvation may be described as the blind receiving sight, the deaf receiving hearing, the dead receiving life; but we have not only received these blessings, we have received CHRIST JESUS himself. It is true that he gave us life from the dead. He gave us pardon of sin; he gave us imputed righteousness. These are all precious things, but we are not content with them; we have received Christ himself. The Son of God has been poured into us, and we have received him, and appropriated him. What a heartful Jesus must be, for heaven itself cannot contain him!”

This truth is the whole reason Jesus came. Man’s sins have separated us from The Lord, His redemptive work at the cross has opened new possibilities up to us. From the earliest days of the Church The Lord has been pouring out His Spirit on us. He is not only with us, He is actually in us. This is quite a powerful truth, Christ in us the hope of glory and the hope of the nations.
This was the radical message that began to be preached by Peter on the day of Pentecost. Suddenly, the very shekinah of God, that unapproachable presence that dwelt in the temple, had flooded the atmosphere in that upper room. It started with a violent mighty wind, then there were cloven tongues of fire, and finally the followers of Jesus themselves began to experience the literal, manifest presence; not only on them, now it was in them. They had become the very dwelling place of God. That is unthinkable; for most people, the Lord seems far away and so uninvolved with their everyday lives.
You see, like it says in Chronicles, “how can you build a house for Me”. If the heavens can’t contain Him how could we ever build a house (or anything for that matter) that could ever keep this infinite, all powerful, omnipresent God. Actually this is the very message that led to the death of the first Christian martyr. Steven was preaching to the Jews how their temple could never house The Lord God, He told them God wanted to live amongst them, actually within them. This was too much for the religious Jews to bear. Like Jesus before him, Steven had to die. Today, The Lord has chosen to live in us. We don’t have to worship blocks of wood or trees, we don’t even have to go to the priest. We have access into the holy presence of God. After all, that is why Jesus bled and died.
