Mal. 4:2 But to you who fear My name
The Sun of Righteousness shall arise
With healing in His wings;
And you shall go out
And grow fat like stall-fed calves.

One of the phrases that I often reflect on at Christmas time is “great is the mystery of godliness”. I often imagine myself as part of the gathering flock around the manger in Bethlehem. My mind becomes transfixed upon the baby in swaddling clothes and at the same time I am aware of the magnificence of His Holy Presence all around me. Of course, not to be forgotten, the Father Himself who gave His only begotten to the world to save us from our sins is orchestrating everything. What a great mystery, this Holy Trinity, this amazing three in one God who has called us again to gaze upon His infant Savior born of a virgin in Bethlehem. One of the ways I have responded to this mystery every year is to express my thoughts and prayers in a Christmas poem. Here is my poem for 2012.

Perfectly Consistent
Creator of time
Strangely warming
His love enflames mine

Sudden Awakening
From blindness of soul
Spirit enlightenment
Has taken its toll

Totally Transforming
Making brand new
Healing completely
Alive through and through

Always Sustaining
In total control
Power infuses
Both body and soul

Thorough Penetration
Rays from above
Complete salvation
Lost in His love

In this poem I reflect on some of the beautiful characteristics of this infant King. He is perfectly consistent. His timing is the definition of perfection. He is always present, always loving, always faithful to all of His word. I also remember how He awakens us from the deadness of our spiritual slumber. He has awakened us from our sleep with the rays of His love. We were once dead but now our hearts are alive with the first love rays of a brand new day. Also, He has refused to leave us in the condition He found us in. We were saved by His grace and we are transformed by His love. He has not only forgiven us but has planted the seeds of obedience in our very souls, surely He is making all things new. Next our reflections must turn to His sovereign rule. This one of the most stunning parts of the mystery. This God who became man is now ruling the universe itself with His mighty words. He not only rules and holds together the universe, He is intimately involved with the every day running of our own lives. He is graciously sustaining and repairing the broken pieces of my life. Just as the warm rays of the noon day sun can be quite penetrating, the rays of this Spiritual Son penetrate our very souls. As we gather around the Christmas tree this season, let our hearts return once again to the stable and the manger two thousand years ago in a little town called Bethlehem. As we reflect in silence in the glory of God’s mystery we can clearly hear the words of the One who speaks to us from heaven. “Unto us a child is born, unto us a Son is given.”

  1. “His love inflames mine” Yes!!! I was raised on Baptist hymns and one of those was “Victory in Jesus” and had these lines: “He loved me ere I knew Him and all my love is due Him…”
