Psa. 42:7 Deep calls unto deep at the noise of Your waterfalls;
All Your waves and billows have gone over me.

There are different ways to say it, Jesus said “Is anybody thirsty?” Others may say, “Have you been born again ?” Someone else may describe it as a longing of the soul. The truth is this, we all know there is more to life than meets the eye. Our hearts give us away, nothing in this world can fulfill us because we have eternity in our hearts. There is a deep, longing desire in every heart that can never be satisfied with anything less than God. David described it as the cry of deep unto deep. Several years ago I came across this poem by John Wright Follette. I hope it blesses you like it has blessed me.

The Call of Deep unto Deep

“Down in the depths of my nature
Where the issues of life are born
From that unknown mystical realm,
Surviving through the ages of storm,
A call is forever rising –
But its language I cannot speak.
It was born ere I had being,
’tis the call of deep unto deep.

Our mother tongue here is awkward,
For no word can fully express
The needs in the depths of nature,
In bondage to sin and distress.
Our hearts in their depths sorely ache;
They hunger, they call, and they seek-
Then silently wait an answer
To the call of deep unto deep.

Down deep in the heart of our God,
In mystical regions sublime,
In the Godhead’s holy council
Long before our world or our time,
An answer to deep unto deep.

The answer indeed was the Word,
The Word when expressed was the Son.
O language of God how profound!
In answer what more could be done?
The heart of our God is hungry,
His portion, His people to seek.
“I thirst,” was cried by the Answer-
‘Tis the call of deep unto deep”

I love the line in the poem that talks about the awkwardness of our mother tongue. Sometimes natural words cannot describe the deep needs that we have in our hearts. These needs are spiritual in nature, no natural solution to this condition exists. There is part of our life where only God will do. Have you been to this place where deep calls unto deep? Many things may bring you there. You might stumble upon it because of a sickness or because of a great disappointment. Regardless of how you came to that place, the answer is the same. God Himself lives in that place of deep calling out to deep. It is actually His voice that has brought you to the precipice. The next move is yours. He has been calling out to you for a long time but finally you may be in a place to hear His voice. Listen, “IS ANYBODY THIRSTY”? If you are He is available. He has water to drink that will quench the deepest of thirsts.
