WASH AND DRESS THE CORPSE
John 3:3 Jesus answered him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.”
Today, I am going to open a huge can of worms. You see, I think many people who say they are “saved”, “born again”, or call themselves Christians really have no clue about spiritual things. Many have been told, “repeat after me…” and now you are saved. That is really no different than praying religious prayers from memory, we have all been there and done that. No, it takes more than repeating a prayer (even though it sometimes happens that way). We have to make contact with God; or should I say He has to make contact with us. Being born again is at the very center of our Christian faith. What is it? It is man in his fallen nature experiencing the life of God in his soul. Salvation is actually an infusion of God Himself into our being. It is not a casual prayer of repetition, it is an encounter with God Almighty. When that happens, your life begins to change. Charles Spurgeon was a great soul winner in London in the 1800’s, here is what he says about being born again.
“… we should be very diligent to take heed that we really are born again, for there are many who fancy they are, who are not. Be assured that the name of a Christian is not the nature of a Christian; and that being born in a Christian land, and being recognized as professing the Christian religion is of no avail whatever, unless there be something more added to it-the being born again, is a matter so mysterious, that human words cannot describe it. The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit. Nevertheless, it is a change which is known and felt: known by works of holiness, and felt by a gracious experience. This great work is supernatural. It is not an operation which a man performs for himself: a new principle is infused, which works in the heart, renews the soul, and affects the entire man. It is not a change of my name, but a renewal of my nature, so that I am not the man I used to be, but a new man in Christ Jesus. To wash and dress a corpse is a far different thing from making it alive: man can do the one, God alone can do the other.”
Have you ever tried to “wash and dress the corpse”? All of us have tried some version of it. No matter how good it looks it still stinks (unless it has been embalmed). No, we have to be born of the Spirit, there is simply no other way. So let me ask you, are you born again? Is Jesus alive in your life? If not, call upon His name. Get real with God and He will become real to you.
