QUICKEN ME
Psa. 119:88 ¶ Quicken me after thy lovingkindness; so shall I keep the testimony of thy mouth.
David was all about the power of God. From His youth, He had been privileged to experience the power of the Spirit upon his life. You may think be a supernatural young person is tough today, it was even harder in David’s time. At least today there are others
experiencing the renewing power of the Holy Spirit upon their lives. In David’s day, he was the only one. Today, the Spirit is poured out on whosoever will, in David’s day, the power of the Spirit was only available for prophets, priests, and sometimes on a king. David learned to live by the power of the Spirit. He wrote prophetic songs under the influence of the Spirit. He conquered Goliath as a teen ager by the power of the Spirit. As he grew older, he served as a great king by the power of the Spirit. In today’s prayer, the Psalmist is crying out to God for His quickening power. He knew he could only walk according to God’s word by the power of the Spirit. Here is something Spurgeon said about the quickening power of the Spirit.
“Quicken me after thy loving kindness. Most wise, most blessed prayer! If we are revived in our own personal piety we shall be out of reach of our assailants. Our best protection from tempters and persecutors is more life. Lovingkindness itself cannot do us greater service than by making us to have life more abundantly. When we are quickened we are able to bear affliction, to baffle cunning, and to conquer sin. We look to the lovingkindness of God as the source of spiritual revival, and we entreat the Lord to quicken us, not according to our deserts, but after the boundless energy of his grace. What a blessed word is this “loving kindness.” If quickened by the Holy Ghost we shall be sure to exhibit a holy character. We shall be faithful to sound doctrine when the Spirit visits us and makes us faithful. None keep the word of the Lord’s mouth unless the word of the Lord’s mouth quickens them. We ought greatly to admire the spiritual prudence of the Psalmist, who does not so much pray for freedom from trial as for renewed life that he may be supported under it. When the inner life is vigorous all is well.”
Today, many Christians make the lethal mistake of depending on human will power to attempt to live the Christian life, impossible!!! Some think just getting the right information is all we need to live our best life now. The problem with that theology is that it leaves God out of the mix. It is not enough to know we are suppose to love our wives or be good fathers to our children. If that was all we needed then it would be easy. The problem is our human will is enslaved to sin until we are freed by the power of the Spirit. So I am going to join with David and old Charles Spurgeon and pray, ” Quicken me Lord, by your lovingkindness”.

Amen x 1000.
Still you have to wonder how many back then (kind of like today) missed out on having the presence of God in their lives when it could have been different.
In David’s day, the power of the Spirit was only available for prophets, priests, and sometimes on a king- and perhaps occasionally a little shepherd boy.
Was David different because the Lord decided to touch him, or was he different because he wanted to touch God? Perhaps it was a little of both. Either way- that was a good word Pastor, thanks.
Hallelujah, Holy, Holy, Holy is He… X a trillion. Thank You Lord for Your Spirit in my life, got to have You daily every second, every minute, every hour. You in me and I in You, Hallelujah, what a Savior. Good morning Pastor, awesome blog, I like what it says about the word ( Quicken) in the dictionary. It says, (to make more rapid:ACCELERATE, also to make or bring alive:VITALIZE, also to stimulate: STIR. 🙂
I will.join You, David and old Charles Spurgeon and Pray. That’s what we are designed to do. Lord make me more steeper, more rapid, as you transform me and flow through me to make me in the image of You. Hallelujah, our God is Good…:)
