GOD’S LITTLE GIRLS AND BOYS
John 6:8-9 ¶ One of His disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, said to Him, “There is a lad here who has five barley loaves and two small fish, but what are they among so many?”
I often think of the little boy in the story of Jesus feeding the five thousand. He never dreamed in a million years that he would find himself in the situation he found himself in that day. Out of all the thousands of people there that day (5000 men plus women and children) this little boy found himself being carted off to Jesus. They were asking for his lunch of all things. All he had was two small fish and some pieces of barley bread, not enough for one adult, let alone the thousands of hungry faces that were suddenly staring at him! When He looked at Jesus how could he say no, He had never seen such kindness and strength in any man before, of course He could have his lunch.
Several years ago I read a sermon by Martin Luther about God’s little boy. In this message Luther said that in every ministry opportunity, The Lord has His little boy in place to be used for His purposes. That has become my ambition in life, I may be over sixty years old, but I still want to be God’s little boy. After all, it doesn’t take much in His hands to change nations.
I often think about something that happened in Costa Rica a number of years ago when I think of God’s little boy. I was invited to hold a revival meeting at a large Assembly of God church near San Jose that was going to last from Sunday until Friday with two meetings each day. The first service was Sunday morning, it was not at all what I had expected. When the service started I can remember my heart being filled with fear. This place was dead, I mean really dead. There were plenty of people there, the church was packed, but I have been in funeral homes that had more excitement and joy than I felt that morning. I can remember preaching my heart out, pleading (actually begging) the congregation to drink His presence. The more I preached the deader the place became. I knew this was going to be a very long week. At the end of the service I gave an altar call. There were just a handful of responses and they were mostly children. That’s when God’s little girl showed up. She was an eleven year old, dirty little street girl (I found out later she was a refugee from the war in Nicaragua). When I prayed for her it was as if she was struck by lightning. She became a Holy Ghost lightning rod. Immediately she was rolling all over the floor being filled with over flowing, supernatural joy. When she was able to talk (well, kind of talk) the place exploded. God’s little girl had saved my meeting. Instead of a boring week of services with depressed Christians, we had a week long, life changing, visitation from heaven.
