REMEMBERING HIS GOODNESS

REMEMBERING HIS GOODNESS

Psa.103:1-2 ¶ Bless the LORD, O my soul;
And all that is within me, bless His holy name! Bless the LORD, O my soul,
And forget not all His benefits:

One of the characteristics of the fallen race of Adam is forgetting the goodness of our God. David obviously knew the importance of stirring up his faith, he often did this by remembering God’s benefits and past deliverances. This practice started in David’s youth. Remember when he faced Goliath? He told King Saul he could deal with Goliath and strengthened himself and assured Saul by saying, “Your servant used to keep his father’s sheep, and when a lion or a bear came and took a lamb out of the flock, I went out after it and struck it, and delivered the lamb from its mouth; and when it arose against me, I caught it by its beard, and struck and killed it. Your servant has killed both lion and bear; and this uncircumcised Philistine will be like one of them, seeing he has defied the armies of the living God.” Moreover David said, “The LORD, who delivered me from the paw of the lion and from the paw of the bear, He will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine.” David was confident of God’s future care because of God’s past faithfulness. We can and should strengthen ourselves in The Lord by rehearsing His past works on our behalf. Here is something Spurgeon said about this truth.

“Have you had no deliverances? Have you passed through no rivers, supported by the divine presence? Have you walked through no fires unharmed? Have you had no manifestations? Have you had no choice favors? The God who gave Solomon the desire of his heart, hath he never listened to you and answered your requests? That God of lavish bounty of whom David sang, Who satisfieth thy mouth with good things, hath he never satiated you with fatness? Have you never been made to lie down in green pastures? Have you never been led by the still waters? Surely the goodness of God has been the same to us as to the saints of old. Let us, then, weave his mercies into a song. Let us take the pure gold of thankfulness, and the jewels of praise and make them into another crown for the head of Jesus. Let our souls give forth music as sweet and as exhilarating as came from David’s harp, while we praise the Lord whose mercy endureth for ever.”

So what has The Lord done for you. Did he draw you out of a sinful life and forgive your sins? Did he deliver you from the power of those sins so you can walk in His freedom? Has he provided for you, has He fed you, has He protected you, has He kept you from disaster and tragedy? So today, let’s join with David and sing and rejoice before The Lord, “O my soul, bless GOD.
From head to toe, I’ll bless his holy name! O my soul, bless GOD,
don’t forget a single blessing!
He forgives your sins—every one.
He heals your diseases—every one.”
