EMBLEMS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
Acts 2:2-3 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them.
It is impossible to describe or fully comprehend the person of the Holy Spirit. He is the most mysterious of the three members of the Godhead. Like the Father and the Son, the Holy Spirit is a distinct person and He is God. I remember the fear and joy I experienced the first time I felt the presence of the Holy Spirit. I trembled in fear of this unknown supernatural person; even though I was afraid, I was irresistibly drawn closer into Him. I was convicted of my sinful lifestyle and at the same time felt love and acceptance beyond anything I had ever known. Before I knew it I was caught up in His world of love.
The word of God is filled with pictures or emblems to display aspects of the wonderful Spirit of God to us. Recently I began to look at a book on the Emblems of the Holy Spirit by F.E. Marsh. Check out this list of the emblems of the Spirit from the introduction to his book.
“The Dove speaks of the beauty and gentleness of the Spirit’s character.
The Seal indicates the security of the Spirit’s grace and proprietorship of His love.
The Holy Anointing Oil is emblematic of Holy Spirit’s character and claims as the Holy One.
The Act of Anointing is suggestive of the Spirit’s consecrating grace and guidance in qualifying and ministering in Divine things.
The Oil is typical of the Spirit’s grace and the illumination of His teaching.
The Fire is an emblem of the purification and penetration of the Spirit’s operations.
The Rain designates the abundance and grace of the Spirit’s supply.
The Atmosphere portrays the element and use of the Spirit’s exclusiveness.
The Wind proclaims the winnowing and searchingness of the Spirit’s power.
Rivers proclaim the abundance of the Spirit’s supply and the plentitude of His grace.
The Dew shadows forth the refreshing and fertilization of the Spirit’s presence.
The Water symbolizes the effectiveness and sufficiency of the Spirit’s ministry.
The Clothing depicts the equipment and strength of the Spirit’s endowment.
The Earnest delineates the promise and sample of the Spirit’s promise of glory.”
Once you begin to walk with this incredible person of mystery, you too will begin to understand these powerful pictures of the Spirit. You will experience the purging and the impassioning of the fire of the Holy Spirit. You will drink of the life giving and refreshing river of joy. You may find yourself lost in the cloud of His love or standing in His persistent showers of blessing. He will pour His oil of empowerment for ministry upon your head and He will mark you with His eternal seal of ownership. Once you begin to walk with this person you will begin to understand the words of the Apostle Paul. “Walk in the Spirit and you will not fulfill the lusts of the flesh”.
