Mary’s Song

Luke 1:46-49 ¶ And Mary said, “My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has looked on the humble estate of his servant. For behold, from now on all generations will call me blessed; for he who is mighty has done great things for me, and holy is his name.

Souls touched by the reality of God have no other recourse, they have to magnify The Lord. Mary is a great example of worship, her life had been forever effected by the overshadowing of the Holy Spirit in her life. She had become a worshiper for all time. The Spirit had touched her, Christ was in her, this was her portion in life. Here are a few thoughts by Adam Clarke on this powerful visitation.

“My soul doth magnify the Lord. The verb ” megalunein ” signifies to celebrate with words, to extol with praises. This is the only way in which God can be magnified, or made great; for, strictly speaking, nothing can be added to God, for he is infinite and eternal; therefore the way to magnify him is to show forth and celebrate those acts in which he has manifested his greatness. My spirit hath rejoiced. Exulted. These words are uncommonly emphatical-they show that Mary’s whole soul was filled with the Divine influence, and wrapped up in God.”

Mary’s whole soul was filled with divine influence, that is the plan of God for all of us. That was the reason Christ came. He came not only to give us length of life but quality of life. We too can have our whole being filled with divine influence. Here is a poem I wrote for this Christmas 2013 called Mary’s Song. I hope you enjoy it.

MARY’S SONG

There was something in her voice,

Something strong and something true.

The baby leapt for joy at the sound

his mother felt like dancing too!

There was no real explanation,

There was no reason or rhyme;

Only that God was somehow very present

They were there, in the fullness of time.

Mary was singing like an angel,

John was dancing to her tune.

The Savior of man was soon to come,

He was living in a virgin’s womb.

Their lives were changed forever,

Changed forever in a day.

The painful past was soon forgotten,

This song of Mary was here to stay.

Like Mary, our lives have been interrupted by a song. Before the song came, our lives were empty, drifting along with no true purpose. Then it happened, divine visitation, overshadowed by the glory of The Lord. The song of joy broke through the depression and darkness, and suddenly we found ourselves in the light of a brand new day. The song of Mary became my song, I am magnifying The Lord and rejoicing in God my Savior. As we go through our daily activities throughout this Christmas season, don’t forget to stop for a moment and remember the song. As you do you will find this Christ with you and in you.
