WATER FROM THE ROCK

Psa. 114:7-8 Tremble, O earth, at the presence of the Lord, at the presence of the God of Jacob, Who turned the rock into a pool of water, the flint into a fountain of waters.

Creation itself responds to our awesome Creator, from the burning bush, to the terrifying plaques in Egypt, the daily provision of manna from above, the turning back of the Red Sea, clouds of quail falling from the sky, and water from the Rock. Moses and the children of Israel saw creation responding to their God to fulfill His plans. He led them with a cloud by day and fire by night, mountains trembled in fear as He spoke His word, even the inhabitants of the land fled in terror before the God of Israel. Today, creation still responds to The Lord. The clouds send the rain to water the earth. The land brings forth its harvest to feed us, all of creation responds to God and takes care of His children. Matthew Henry spoke powerfully about today’s verse and God’s power moving in behalf of His sons and daughters.

“The same almighty power that turned waters into a rock to be a wall to Israel (Ex 14:22), turned the rock into waters to be a well to Israel. As they were protected, so they were provided for, by miracles, standing miracles; for such was the standing water, that fountain of waters, into which the rock, the flinty rock, was turned, “and that rock was Christ,” Corinthians 10:4. For he is a fountain of living waters to his Israel, from whom they receive grace for grace.”

This same power of provision is at work in our salvation. We are saved from sin by the very power of God. Here is how Franz Delitsch says it.

“The flint into a fountain of waters. The causing of water to gush forth out of the flinty rock is a practical proof of unlimited omnipotence and of the grace which converts death into life. Let the earth then tremble before the Lord, the God of Jacob. It has already trembled before him, and before him let it tremble. For that which he has been he still ever is; and as he came once he will come again.”

Today, we are trembling with joy before The Lord. As creation responds to His voice, those who love Him respond to His love. It was His love demonstrated at the cross that first captured our atention, His love that poured out upon us in the person of the Holy Spirit birthed us and now sustains us everyday. Just as water flowed from the rock in the wilderness to quench the thirst of the children of Israel in the wilderness, Living
Water flows from our Rock today. Christ Himself is the Rock, He was smitten by man as He suffered and died on the cross. A flow of life giving healing waters began to flow from that Rock. The water is flowing today. Are you thirsty? If you are you can come and have a drink.
