2 Cor. 4:16
Therefore we do not lose heart. Even though our outward man is perishing, yet the inward man is being renewed day by day.
Paul said that the temporary, light afflictions of this world can’t be compared to the weight of glory that we taste here and will increase infinitely throughout eternity. The key is to put ourselves in a position to benefit from this weight of glory. In today’s verse Paul tells us how, he said we must be renewed day by day by day. Renewal is the key to keeping your Christianity fresh, alive, and real in our world full of danger and temptation. First, what is renewal? Here is a definition from Zodhiates Word Book.
“( anakainízō,). This word means “to make new”, the daily renewing and strengthening by the Spirit which lifts him above external pressures.
The only way to experience this renewal is to have a vital, consistent relationship with the Holy Spirit. This happens as we take time in His presence in worship and saturating in the glory of the Lord. Adam Clarke spoke of the importance of renewal in the Methodist revival in the 1700’s. Check out his thoughts.
“Our soul – that which cannot be felt or seen by others, is renewed – is revived, and receives a daily increase of light and life from God, so that we grow more holy, more happy, and more meet for glory every day. It was an opinion among the Jews that even spirits (Angels) stood in need of continual renovation. They say that “God renews the angels daily, by putting them into the fiery river from which they proceeded, and then gives them the same name they had before.” And they add, that in like manner he renews the hearts of the Israelites every year, when they turn to him by repentance. It is a good antidote against the fear of death to find, as the body grows old and decays, the soul grows young and is invigorated.”
Every day all of us face challenges to our faith and invasions of our peace. Thankfully we have been given the resources we need to live an abundant, victorious life no matter what we face. Like Paul said, we live in this world being made new by the Holy Spirit every day. So go ahead and get in the River of renewal, your very survival depends on it.
