1 Cor. 2:14-16 – Someone living on an entirely human level rejects the revelations of God’s Spirit, for they make no sense to him. He can’t understand the revelations of the Spirit because they are only discovered by the illumination of the Spirit. Those who live in the Spirit are able to carefully evaluate all things, and they are subject to the scrutiny of no one but God. For who has ever intimately known the mind of the Lord Yahweh well enough to become his counselor? Christ has, and we possess Christ’s perceptions.
In the King James Bible this passage says that we literally have the mind of Christ. That is one of the enormous changes that happens to us when we are born again. The new birth awakens us to another realm, the supernatural realm of God. Things that made no sense before now become clear and precious to us. Jesus becomes real, the Bible becomes real, redemption becomes real, even church comes alive and becomes one of our great joys. The focus of this revelation is the cross of Christ. The power and source of the revelation is the Holy Spirit. That’s why Paul insisted that his message was Christ and his success was dependent on the power of the Holy Spirit with signs and wonders. Here is a quote from the Passion Notes on this passage.
“That is, we believers possess the Holy Spirit, who reveals the thoughts and purposes of Christ. The revelation of the kingdom of God that Jesus preached was not understood by the intellect of men but by those who welcomed his truth. Humanly speaking, no one can understand the mysteries of God without the Holy Spirit. Those who have the Holy Spirit now possess the perceptions of Christ’s mind and can implement his purposes on the earth.”
This is what is meant by having the mind of Christ. The Holy Spirit comes to live inside of us. His indwelling presence gives us power and understanding. The message and power of the gospel becomes very real to us by the Holy Spirit. So what should be our response? Paul said we should endeavor to live in the Spirit. In other words, if His Spirit is in you, press in to His presence. Allow Christ to be formed deeper into the fabric of your life. As Christ is formed in you, you will comprehend His purposes in your life.
