1 Thes.5:19 – KJV – Quench not the Spirit.
How many times have you heard we have to “slow the spread” and “flatten the curve”? I think most of us have our bellies filled with being lectured to and being treated like children. Now that I got that out let me share what’s on my heart. Obviously Covid-19 is highly contagious. We have all learned more than we ever wanted to know about stopping the spread of viruses. We have heard about shedding the virus and quarantining and previous morbidity and protecting our community. As I was thinking about this recently I begin to think of another highly contagious condition. The condition I am referring to is being filled with the Holy Spirit. When you are filled with the Spirit you are actually a highly contagious person. The anointing can be communicated to others through our speech, our singing, and our touch. We can actually be so infected with the Spirit that standing next to others puts them in jeopardy of being infected with this dreaded disease. The disease is called pentecostalism.
Now that brings me to today’s verse, quench not the Spirit. Paul is describing efforts to thwart the spread of the anointing of the Spirit. He told the church in Thessalonica not to suppress the gifts of the Spirit. I thought this simple verse is important; I included it today from several translations. Read them, I believe this is highly important for the season we are in.
Message – Don’t suppress the Spirit.
NIV – Do not put out the Spirit’s fire.
NASB – Do not quench the Spirit.
NLT – Do not stifle the Holy Spirit
Amp. – Do not quench (suppress or subdue) the [Holy] Spirit;
Wuest – Stop stifling and suppressing the Spirit.
TPT – Never restrain or put out the fire of the Holy Spirit.
I think this is exactly what has happened to churches who were previously passionate about the fire of God and the gifts of the Spirit. For “church growth” purposes the Spirit has been relegated to side meetings or for your own personal time. Let me say this very clearly, the baptism with the Holy Spirit is connected very closely to praying in tongues; praying in tongues publicly. The gifts of the Spirit all flow out of the atmosphere created when we worship the Lord corporately in the Spirit. Stopping the expression of this gift is quenching the Holy Spirit. Quenching the Spirit is the only way to stop the spread of the dreaded Holy Ghost virus. As we come out of our season of quarantine let us make a very intentional decision. We will use all means at our disposal to spread the infection of the Spirit of God.
