Ps.103:8 – Lord, you’re so kind and tenderhearted to those who don’t deserve it and so patient with people who fail you! Your love is like a flooding river overflowing its banks with kindness.
I love this translation of this particular verse, “Your love is like a flooding river overflowing its banks with kindness”. Parris and I lived on the Bogue Falaya River for a couple of years a few years back. That river would overflow its banks and consume our property once or twice a year. It was as if the river had a life all its own. When it came out of its banks it consumed and effected everything. Nothing could escape its overwhelming flow. God’s love and kindness is an overflowing river. It is actually a person, the precious Holy Spirit. His love is in a constant state of overflow. The Father and the Son of God are the fountainhead where this river flows from. Step into this river and you will be wrapped in His kindness and consumed by His love. Here is how John Goodwin described this mercy and graciousness of our God.
“And upon the same ground it is that the Scriptures, in several places do not only assert and testify that God is “merciful” and “gracious”, “but abundant in mercy and full of grace”; and not simply that there is redemption in him, but plenteousness of redemption. “Let him return unto the Lord and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.” The commodity which we stand in need of is mercy and the pardon of our sins, because we have been unholy and ungodly creatures; this commodity is abundantly in God. There it is treasured up as waters are in the store-house of the sea; there is no end of the treasures of his grace, a mercy, pardon, and compassion. There is no man, being in want, but had rather go to a rich man’s door to be relieved, than to the door of a poor man, if he knows the rich man to be as liberal and as bountifully disposed as the poor man can be.”
Parris and I no longer live on the Bogue Falaya but we have many, many memories. The river creates an atmosphere and sometimes it seems to create almost its own weather system. We have decided that we are river dwellers after all. We now live on the flooding river of God’s love that overflows its banks with His kindness.
