Heb.12:5- And have you forgotten his encouraging words spoken to you as his children? He said, “My child, don’t underestimate the value of the discipline and training of the Lord God, or get depressed when he has to correct you.
That really goes without saying, no one likes to be disciplined. The times we live in has really changed the messages that are often preached. As a young Christian I remember hearing many sermons about the return of Christ, messages on being a disciple of Jesus, and of course the discipline of the Lord. None of those topics would crack the top ten list in today’s church world.
The Bible teaches that the Lord only disciplines those He loves. His discipline is geared to making us more Christ-like as we humble ourselves under His correcting hand. In today’s verse we we see the the love of God intwined in His disciplinary actions. If you are His son or daughter discipline is part of the package. Here are some thoughts from the Passion Notes on the discipline of the Lord.
“The Aramaic word used here means nurturing love, a mother’s love. This passage shows both the strength of a father’s love in how God disciplines us and the nurturing care of a mother’s love. The Aramaic could be translated, “The Lord shows his nurturing love [mercy] to those he is sanctifying.
The Aramaic word for “draws you to himself” is nagad, which can mean “scourge” (severely punish) or “to attract,” “to draw,” or “tug the heart.” The Greek is “The Lord scourges [chastises] every son he receives.”
Why would the Lord discipline us? He is working on us to make us better tools or vessels for Him to work through to communicate His love to this generation. A father or mother disciplines their child for their ultimate protection and good. In the same way our Heavenly Father disciplines us for our good. In the midst of His correction is His attraction, He draws us to hold onto Him and to experience His tender mercy even and especially in our times of correction. His faithful training of your life is the guarantee of His merciful love that He extends to you. Even during the times of His strongest correction He invites us in close to be encompassed by His love.
