Mk.5:1-3 – Then they came to the other side of the sea, to the country of the Gadarenes. And when He had come out of the boat, immediately there met Him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit, who had his dwelling among the tombs;
This story of the demon possessed man in Gadara is filled with spiritual implication. When I read these first verses in this account the statement “who had his dwelling among the tombs”literally leaps out at me. This man lived among the dead; does this ring a bell? In one sense all of us live among the dead because we are all in a culture inhabited by fallen humans. Yet there are those that could be said, like the man from Gadara, have their “dwelling” among the dead. Many have chosen to live their whole life in the cemetery of this world, being influenced by the culture of death every moment.
What do I mean? The culture of this age has no knowledge of God. They have done their best to not only abandon God and His laws for themselves, they are trying to build a society no longer founded on the law of God. Jesus said it like this, “For you are like whitewashed tombs, which outwardly appear beautiful, but within are full of dead people’s bones and all uncleanness”. Our society no longer has a problem with sex outside of marriage, pornographic entertainment, homosexuality (the sin of Sodom), drunken behavior, and abortion. Our world had made it’s home among the tombs. Here is how Matthew Henry describes this scene.
“He had his dwelling among the tombs, among the graves of dead people. Their tombs were out of the cities, in desolate places; which gave the devil great advantage: for woe to him that is alone. Perhaps the devil drove him to the tombs, to make people fancy that the souls of the dead were turned into demons, and did what mischief was done, so to excuse themselves from it. The touch of a grave was polluting. The unclean spirit drives people into that company that is defiling, and so keeps possession of them. Christ, by rescuing souls out of Satan’s power, saves the living from among the dead.”
Henry said it, only Christ can rescue us from the world of the dead. Maybe its time to move your residence. If it feels like you are living in the tombs its time to make a change. Come live among the people of God, come and live in the land of the living.
