Mk.5:1-3 — They went across the lake to the region of the Gerasenes. When Jesus got out of the boat, a man with an impure spirit came from the tombs to meet him. This man lived in the tombs, and no one could bind him anymore, not even with a chain.

Last week I noticed for the first time that the madman from Gadara actually lived in the tombs. I am sure there are some people living in tombs in New Orleans. My wife Parris and I were talking about where this man lived and Parris said something like, “I wonder if he would talk to the dead people”. The more I thought about this man’s situation I came to the conclusion that he did. Think about it, living with dead bodies for months and probably years. He also had to deal with Legion, multiple spirits (some say 6000) that inhabited this man’s body. You know he heard voices and yes he was talking to dead people.

Then it occurred to me, we all live in the tombs. We are surrounded with dead people, people dead in their sins, every day of our lives. Actually we have conversations with these dead folks all of the time. The problem is not the talking to them so much, its in listening to what they say that causes our problems.

The conversations could go something like this:

“You are a looser. You have never done anything and you will never amount to anything”

“Your symptoms sound like cancer. I know someone who had that and they didn’t last five months. Do you have a will?”

“You better stop going to those church services, you are gonna get Covid. Didn’t you hear about that choir who all got sick from choir practice? I think some of them died.”

“It’s okay to drink, even Jesus turned the water into wine. After all, everyone drinks.”

“It’s okay to have sex before you are married. Marriage is just a piece of paper anyway.”

You get the drift. Dead folks can only speak death because they are dead. Maybe its time to move out of the cemetery, come hang out at the house of God and let people who are alive pick up the conversation. You will find out you are not a looser, your not going to die of cancer, Covid is highly over rated, that there is a new wine that far surpasses alcohol, and that God has a partner for you to enjoy in marriage for the rest of your life. Dead people can’t tell the truth and resurrected people won’t lie.
