HONORED BY GOD

I Kings 17:21, 22 – And he stretched himself out on the child three times, and cried out to the LORD and said, “O LORD my God, I pray, let this child’s soul come back to him.” Then the LORD heard the voice of Elijah; and the soul of the child came back to him, and he revived.

I love the story of Elijah, the widow, and her son. Elijah had been sustained with bread and flesh for months by ravens when he lived by the Brook Cherith during the famine in Israel. When the brook dried up and the ravens stopped coming the Lord sent him to Zarepath where the Lord had commanded a widow to feed the prophet. Elijah went and found the widow who was preparing her last meal for her and her son. Elijah told her if she would take care of Elijah that God would take care of her. That’s exactly what happened. A short time later tragedy stuck this home; her son suddenly died. The Lord wanted to show this woman how He would care for her and her son no matter what happened. The Lord raised that dead boy back to life. This woman had honored God and His prophet; He would surely take care of her. Here is how Henry describes this scene.

“The resurrection of the child, and the great satisfaction it gave to the mother: the child revived. Elijah brought him to his mother, who, we may suppose, could scarcely believe her own eyes, and therefore Elijah assures her it is her own: “It is thy son that liveth; see it is thy own, and not another”. The good woman hereupon cries out, Now I know that thou art a man of God; though she knew it before, by the increase of her meal, yet the death of her child she took so unkindly that she began to question it; but now she was abundantly satisfied that he had both the power and goodness of a man of God, and will never doubt of it again, but give up herself to the direction of his word and the worship of the God of Israel. Thus the death of the child was for the glory of God and the honor of his prophet.”

This is like the story of Lazarus, this sickness is not about death but it happened to display the glory of the Lord. Lazarus being raised from the dead magnified the ministry of Jesus. The raising of this widow’s son displayed clearly that if you honor the Lord, He will honor you.
