Rev.21:23 – And the city has no need of the sun or of the moon to shine on it, for the glory of God has illuminated it, and its lamp is the Lamb.
This verse literally blows my mind. There is no need for the sun in heaven because Jesus will be the light of heaven. There is also no darkness or shadows; His light is everywhere engulfing and consuming everything.
In this creation, the sun is intended to be a visual representation of the Lord. The light and energy from the sun is relentless; it is a constant source of light, life, and energy. The entire earth prospers and brings fruit and productivity from the light of the sun. The sun shines on the grape vineyards and they produce grapes. The sun shines on the fields of wheat and they produce grain. In the same way, the radiance of the Lord shines from the face of Jesus on all of us. His love shining on us brings productivity into and from our lives. Here is how Jonathan Edwards describes this love:
“Heaven is a part of the creation which God has built for this end, to be the place of his glorious presence. And it is his abode forever. Here he will dwell and gloriously manifest himself to eternity. And this renders heaven a world of love; for God is the fountain of love, as the sun is the fountain of light. And therefore the glorious presence of God in heaven fills heaven with love, as the sun placed in the midst of the hemisphere in a clear day fills the world with light. The Apostle tells us that God is love. And therefore seeing he is an infinite Being, it follows that he is an infinite fountain of love. Seeing he is an all-sufficient Being, it follows that he is a full and overflowing and an inexhaustible fountain of love. Seeing he is an unchangeable and eternal Being, he is an unchangeable and eternal source of love. There even in heaven dwells that God from whom every stream of holy love, yea, every drop that is or ever was proceeds.”
God’s love is constantly shining on us, He is shining on us today. Taking in this radiant love transforms us. We are not only restored and made whole by His love, we emit this love into our world. The more we take in the more we pour out. In these dark times the Lord is calling for worshippers. This is His appointed means to impact this dark generation.
