Acts 2:3,4 – Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
Recently I have had several people ask me if the events of 2020 and 2021 indicate we are getting close to the end of the age. I think we have definitely made a step closer in this last year, my attention goes to the spiritual signs that will release the final harvest in our nation.
In the book of Acts Peter was asked similar questions on the Day of Pentecost. Peter said that the outpouring of the Spirit characterized by speaking in tongues and other spiritual gifts were the greatest sign of the approaching kingdom reign of Jesus Christ. On the Day of Pentecost the Holy Spirit fell on the followers of Jesus and they began to speak in tongues. Luke said the Spirit gave them ‘utterance’. This word utterance is describing supernatural speech. Here is how the NKJ and Vincent’s word book define this word.
“ apophtheggomai – to enunciate plainly, i.e. declare: — say, speak forth, utterance.
to speak out, speak forth, pronounce not a word of everyday speech but one “belonging to dignified and elevated discourse”
Used only by Luke and in the Acts. Lit., to utter. A peculiar word, and purposely chosen to denote the clear, loud utterance under the miraculous impulse. It is used by later Greek writers of the utterances of oracles or seers.”
The speaking in tongues was a clear sign to the unbelievers of the coming kingdom of God. Luke also used that same word to describe Peter’s words of explanation. You would have to say that Peter’s words were also a supernatural, prophetic utterance.
Acts 2:14 – But Peter, standing with the eleven, lifted up his voice and addressed them…
The word ‘addressed’ is also the Greek word – apophtheggomai – Luke’s intention in his word choice was to describe the supernatural nature of Peter’s address. What was happening in this passage was a glimpse of the last day outpouring that is stirring in our world right now. The Spirit is being poured out on God’s people. They are being filled with His Spirit and magnifying Him supernaturally in their natural language as well as in other tongues. The Lord is also urging His people to step into the prophetic speaking that we see Peter display on the Day of Pentecost. These gifts together, public worship in tongues and prophetic declaration will release the final harvest.
