Lk.15:21-24 – And the son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and in your sight; I am no longer worthy to be called your son.’ But the father said to his slaves, ‘Quickly bring out the best robe and put it on him, and put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet; and bring the fattened calf, slaughter it, and let’s eat and celebrate; for this son of mine was dead and has come to life again; he was lost and has been found.’ And they began to celebrate.

This story told by Jesus is a great glimpse into the Father’s love for fallen man. He loves us even in our miserable state caused by our rebellion against Him and His kingdom. Jesus told this parable showing the love and mercy of the Heavenly Father for all of His lost sons and daughters. He greeted his wayward son with hugs and kisses with no questions asked. He then began to shower His gifts upon His son. These gifts are a picture of the gifts the Lord showers on all of us as we return to Him.
The first gift was the Father’s beautiful robe. This image brings two blessings immediately to mind. First this is the robe of righteousness. All who turn to Christ have their filthy robe of their past life replaced with the righteous garment of Christ. Second, it reminds us of the coat Jacob gave his son Joseph. This coat is the picture of the anointing that rested mightily on Joseph, and now rests on us.
Next, the Father gave His son the family ring. This too is a picture of the Holy Spirit; He is our earnest or foretaste of our life in heaven. This was the Father’s promise of this new life for His restored son.
After that the Father gave His son shoes. These are a glimpse of the promises of God. The Father is bringing His son into a life of eternal promises and blessing that cannot be broken.
Finally, the Father called for the fatted calf. This speaks to us of the gospel feast that is now ours. We have a place at the table of the Lord that will nourish us all our days. This fatted calf also describes the celebration of the kingdom. There is a great celebration building in heaven in this generation as His wayward sons and daughters come home.

  1. A beautiful reality of our Heavenly Fathers response towards backsliden son’s and daughter’s . Some Christians stand in judgement, as the story goes on to tell of the brothers attitude towards the fathers reaction. Could the brother have been part of the stumbling block. We must love unconditionally and leave all judgements to the only righteous Judge.

  2. The Lord is a gentleman, He will not force himself upon us. In His great mercy will allow us to wander in the wilderness/ignorance so we may learn that He is the Way, Truth, and Life! In Great Wisdom he allows us to see what so-called life is without him…and that the world seeks to steal, kill, and destroy us. We come crawling back humbled and He doesn’t say “I told ya so,” He tackles us with unbelievable forgiveness! A broken and contrite heart He will not despise! Then He opens up heaven and we party with the angels!!!!! ????
