Mk.1:17,18 – Then Jesus said to them, “Follow Me, and I will make you become fishers of men.” They immediately left their nets and followed Him.
There was no other explanation after seeing what I saw last night, Jesus walking on water and transporting a boat across a lake. My only conclusion, Jesus of Nazareth is the Son of God. This marked the beginning of the end, from that day Jesus began to tell all of us why He had really come. He hadn’t come to establish an earthly kingdom or drive the Romans out of Israel, He had come as the Lamb of God to take away our sins. Jesus taught in the synagogue that next day about the true bread that comes down from heaven. He said that he was the bread of life. He had not come just to fill our bellies but to fill our souls. If anyone would eat the living bread that He offered they would never hunger or thirst again. Just when I thought it couldn’t get any more radical He said this, “Unless you eat My body and drink My blood you will have no life in you”. That was the line in the sand for most people, Jesus wasn’t going to be the kind of Messiah the people were looking for, He had come to be the Savior of the world. That’s probably when I began to connect the dots; maybe that’s what Jesus meant when He told Nicodemus, “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life”.
Jesus had come to die, that’s what John the Baptist had said three years ago when he said, “Behold the Lamb of God that takes away the sin of the world”. The miracles had been amazing but this was even more amazing. Jesus had come to die so that I could live.
So here I am at the end of my journey, Jesus died on the cross over thirty years ago and now its my turn to stand for Him. I’ll never forget how I denied Him on His last night, I will not deny Him again on my last night. I will see Him soon, He is waiting for me on the other side of my cross. The only difference, I have made a special request. I want the Romans to crucify me upside down, because I am not worthy to die the same way my Lord did.
