Ps.16:8 – I have set the LORD continually before me;
Because He is at my right hand, I will not be shaken.

Having your eyes on Jesus is critical in this confusing generation. This reminds me of what Paul encouraged us to do, “set your affections on things above”. David was fixated on the Lord, this was how David often found himself lost in God’s presence. This is how John Trappe describes this phrase, “I have set the Lord always before me.”

“I have equally set, or proposed. The apostle translateth it, “I foresaw the Lord always before my face.” I set the eye of my faith full upon him, and suffer it not to take to other things; I look him in the face, as the eagle looketh upon the sun; with an eye of adamant, which turns only to one point: so here, I have equally set the Lord before me, without irregular affections and passions. And this was one of those lessons that his reins had taught him, that the Holy Spirit had David was fixated on the Lord dictated unto him.”

Here is the Passion Translation of this verse.

Ps.16:8 – Because you are close to me and always available,
my confidence will never be shaken,
for I experience your wrap-around presence every moment.

Brian Simmons describes the second part of this verse as entering God’s “wrap around presence”. This is our place of protection, power and revelation. Here is how Richard Greenham describes this phrase.

““He is at my right hand.” This phrase of speech is borrowed from those who, when they take upon them the patronage, defense, or tuition of any, will set them on their right hand, as in place of most safeguard. Experience confirmeth this in children, who in any imminent danger shroud and shelter themselves under their father’s arms or hands, as under a sufficient buckler. Such was the estate of the man of God, as here appeareth, who was hemmed and hedged in with the power of God, both against present evils, and dangers to come.”

This verse pretty much describes the secret of David’s life. He turned his eyes toward the Lord and entered God’s wrap around presence. The good news for us is this same presence is available to us today. This will become not only your place of protection, power and revelation, it will also become your place of extreme joy.
