Acts 1:6-8 – “So, when they had come together, they began asking Him, saying, ‘Lord, is it at this time that You are restoring the kingdom to Israel?’ But He said to them, ‘It is not for you to know periods of time or appointed times which the Father has set by His own authority; but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem and in all Judea, and Samaria, and as far as the remotest part of the earth.’”
Everyone always wants to know when the kingdom of God will come. That is the question the disciples were asking and the question many are asking today. They had in mind an earthly kingdom centered in Israel with Jesus as king. The problem was they had no idea at that point what the kingdom of God even was. Jesus instantly steered the conversation another way. At first glance, it may seem He dodged their question. Actually He gave them the answer; not the one they were looking for, and at first they did not see the connection. Jesus said the Holy Spirit would come upon them soon. Could that be the answer to their question? Absolutely! The Holy Spirit is the very essence of the Kingdom of God. Like Paul said, “The kingdom of God is not meat or drink but righteousness, peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit”.
Here is how Brian Simmons describes today’s passage. “The kingdom of God is entered into by the Holy Spirit, and not by observing feasts and ritual meals. We must be born of the Spirit in order to enter into God’s kingdom realm. To have the Holy Spirit is to have the realities of God’s kingdom.”
Many today are wondering if the kingdom of God is about to begin. It already has. We can taste the edge of it breaking in on us every time we drink of His Spirit. The kingdom is expanding one soul at a time as we share the good news of the gospel of Jesus Christ. If you are filled with the Spirit you are already familiar with His kingdom. Relish His presence! Drink and drink again of His living waters. This is how we survive and walk in victory in the middle of the kingdom of this age. When is the kingdom coming? Rejoice, it is already here in our midst!!!
