Rom.3:23 – 26 – for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, being justified as a gift by His grace through the redemption which is in Christ Jesus, whom God displayed publicly as a propitiation in His blood through faith. This was to demonstrate His righteousness, because in God’s merciful restraint He let the sins previously committed go unpunished; for the demonstration, that is, of His righteousness at the present time, so that He would be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.

After I experienced a second visitation in 1994 (I call it my second new birth) I began to have a hunger for a foundation in my theology. Without being aware of it my preaching had become man centered over the years. The Lord became more and more just a way to a better life now with an eternal life insurance policy tied to it. That all began to change when I read the biography of Jonathan Edwards in 1995. I saw from his life and preaching a God centeredness that I was totally unfamiliar with. His message was focusing on God’s intent through everything He did. His purpose for creation as well as redemption was simply to display His glory. When I experienced redemption two things happened at the same time; God was glorified by the change in my life and I was filled with joy in knowing Him. That was it! God is glorified and I am satisfied. That is the focus of all that He does. Here is how John Piper describes this.

“God’s passion for his own glory and his passion for my joy in him are not at odds. God’s righteousness is not the enemy of his mercy. His commitment to uphold the worth of his name does not consign me to destruction, though I have besmeared his name by indifference and distrust. Rather, in the death of his Son, Jesus Christ, God conspired to vindicate his righteousness and justify sinners in one act. Which means that his zeal to be glorified and his zeal to save sinners are one.”

So how does that relate to you and me? That is the best part. My calling is to pursue my own joy and happiness in Him. That is foreign to many people but knowing Him is the highest of any pleasures. To know Him and help others know and enjoy Him is the purpose of life. This is what the Lord is after, His glory. Discover this in your own life and an unbelievable adventure will begin.

  1. Thank you Pastor Bailey for sharing the depth and richness of your knowledge of him. Just what I needed!

  2. When the Lord shall have washed away the filth of the daughters of Zion and cleansed the bloodstains of Jerusalem from its midst by a spirit of judgement and a spirit of burning…
