1 Peter 1:1,2 – Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ,
To those who reside as strangers, scattered throughout Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia, who are chosen according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, by the sanctifying work of the Spirit, to obey Jesus Christ and be sprinkled with His blood: May grace and peace be multiplied to you.

I have been pondering or maybe chewing on this passage of scripture all week. What struck me was the interesting contrast in the words Peter chose to relate to the believers in the region he was writing to. Apparently, there had been a severe outbreak of persecution in this particular region and Peter wrote this letter to bring encouragement to the Christians there. A portion of the church there had possibly been ‘scattered’ by earlier persecution in Judea and all they could think was ‘here we go again’. Again, look carefully at what Peter is saying in his opening comments. He uses the word scattered – diaspora – which literally means scattered like seeds. He also used the word strangers – parepídēmos – which is an alien, a traveler from another country. Then he uses a word that pulls everything together, chosen – eklektós. Here is how the Passion Translations reads in this verse.

1 Peter 1:1,2 – TPT – From Peter, an apostle of Jesus the Anointed One, to the chosen ones who have been scattered abroad like “seed” into the nations living as refugees, to those living in Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, and throughout the Roman provinces of Asia and Bithynia. You are not forgotten, for you have been chosen and destined by Father God. The Holy Spirit has set you apart to be God’s holy ones, obedient followers of Jesus Christ who have been gloriously sprinkled with his blood. May God’s delightful grace and peace cascade over you many times over!

So maybe many in the church that Peter was writing to felt like they had been scattered, like forgotten migrants tossed randomly by their circumstances. Peter was letting them know that they have been known and loved by God from eternity, they were His chosen people, and they were not in this situation by accident. They had been planted there by the Lord to bare fruit.
If we are honest, all of us can relate to this. I have felt scattered and isolated at times over the last two years of Covid and Ida. The Lord is telling us that if we are His we are not scattered haphazardly but planted strategically. The Lord is setting things up for the advancing of His kingdom. So scattered is not bad if the Lord is doing the scattering, He puts us exactly where He wants us for our good and His glory.

  1. Whatever the season, reason, or time, I know I’m right/ripe where I’m supposed to be. God calls us that are chosen to ‘scatter’ what he’s placed in Us. “many are called, but few are chosen.” (Matthew 22:14). The chosen few have to: “Enlarge the place of your tent,(A)
    stretch your tent curtains wide,
    do not hold back;
    lengthen your cords,
    strengthen your stakes” Isaiah 54:2
    We the chosen ones have to keep moving in what’s planned for us on purpose. When I get stuck, I get up, get refreshed in His Presence and his Word and run! I hear him calling; I can only Answer ~ where I’m at🙏🏽❣️🙏🏽

  2. AMEN! PASTOR FRANK A MAN OF GOD WITH A STRONG ANOINT ON HIS LIFE. I THANK GOD FOR THE MESSAGE HE TAUGHT ABOUT SCATTER. I REALLY NEEDED TO HEAR THAT MESSAGE HE HELPED ME TO REALIZE WHY I WAS SCATTER FROM HOUSE TO HOUSE. ALL THOUGH I DIDN’T LIKED WHERE I WAS ITS WAS ALL FOR THE GLORY OF GOD. AND THINKING BACK THE PLACES WHERE I WAS AT WAS PREPARING ME FOR MINISTRY .JESUS WAS USING ALL OF THAT FOR MY GOOD AND HIS GLORY AMEN!

  3. I love this… He puts us where he wants us for our good and His Glory!! So amazing that He loves us despite us!! We must go through the fire to prove that our faith is genuine and when we have been tested…we are filled with inexpressible joy and glory with the revelation of Jesus Christ!!! When we acknowledge that we can’t…He swoops in and shows us HE can! We must never let go of the hope that lives inside us!!
