Ps.136:1 – Oh, give thanks to the LORD, for He is good!
For His mercy endures forever.

Thankfulness is a cure for what ails us no matter what it is that is causing our aggravation. Being unthankful comes from taking our eyes off of Jesus. How do I know that? I guess because I have done it way too often. When we fix our gaze upon Him all we can see is goodness and greatness. The result? Unthankful flies out the window. David’s Psalm 136 is a call to worship and thanksgiving. King Solomon had this song sung as the great temple was being dedicated. The result was that the glory of the Lord filled the temple. King Jehoshaphat called for the Levites to sing this song as they led the Jewish army into battle. The result that time? The glory of the Lord scattered all of their enemies. Here is how Spurgeon describes this Psalm.

“The inspired writer calls us to praise Jehovah for all his goodness to us, and all the greatness of his power in blessing his chosen. We thank our parents, let us praise our heavenly Father; we are grateful to our benefactors, let us give thanks unto the Giver of all good. For he is good. Essentially he is goodness itself, practically all that he does is good, relatively he is good to his creatures. Let us thank him that we have seen, proved, and tasted that he is good. He is good beyond all others: indeed, he alone is good in the highest sense; he is the source of good, the good of all good, the sustainer of good, the perfecter of good, and the rewarder of good. For this he deserves the constant gratitude of his people. For his mercy endures for ever. We shall have this repeated in every verse of this song, but not once too often. It is the sweetest stanza that a man can sing.”

Our nation has called a day of thanksgiving from the days when we were still thirteen colonies. The great church in Northampton, Massachusetts celebrated thanksgiving as early as 1740. What was the purpose? They were giving thanks to the Lord for pouring out His Spirit on their community and for blessing their labors with a great harvest. We have much to be thankful for especially in these troubled times. Join with me as we endeavor to turn our eyes upon the only One who is good and give thanks to Him for all He has done.

  1. I too know when the pressures of life come, and seemingly never at a good time, right, like Peter’s example we can say or do opposite what we believe has no part in us any longer, only to discover, perhaps it lingers. What we then do going forward becomes more important than the regrettable occurrence that came out of us. Repent, ask for His strength in that area and be aware of what took place when put in similar circumstances again.

  2. AMEN! JESUS IS GOOD EVEN WHEN WE GO THROUGH THE STORMS OF LIFE GOD THERE HIS MERCY AND GRACE IS WITH US. THAT’S IS WHY I PRAISE AND WORSHIP JESUS JUST FOR WHO HE IS. I THANK GOD HIS MERCY ENDURES FOREVER!🙏🙌👏
